Faberge Egg Project Process

The first major First Year Project was to make our own interpretation of a Faberge Egg.
Mine is based of an Ancient Grecian Urn. With the narrative qualities of Greek pottery so prominent throughout my research, I decided the exterior needed to tell a story. I chose the mythical story of Circe the sea witch, who turned the once-beautiful Scylla into a vicious sea monster with multiple heads, so these figures are depicted by the low relief on the outer side of the egg. The inside creates a diorama which shows the monster Scylla became.
Finally, the 'urn' is presented as if washed up on the rocky shores of a beach after many years of being lost at sea. Thanks for looking!

I used styrene templates to help me create an accurate and symmetrical shape.

The leaf pattern at the top were asecut. The handles were lasercut and then a little milliput was sculpted on top. Assembled, then base colour sprayed on and dry brush was used to age and texture.

Assembling and painted barnacles. These had previously been casted in fast cast, so I could create multiples and position them around the egg.

Dry Brush technique used to add sense of depth. These leafs were also moulded and cast in fast cast, then bent to shape as they were setting in order to sit against this bell shape (carved out of chemiwood).

One sea monster was sculpted and a silicone box mould was made. I then casted multiple and bent the necks after heating the fast cast pieces in the oven. Hand painted, stuck into egg and miliput was used to sculpt waves around them.

The basic structure of the rock stand was created using polystyrene. I then textures and painted it.
